Trauma Insurance
Life doesn’t always go according to plan. Be prepared for the unexpected.
We can’t foresee every event that might change our lives forever, but we can plan for the financial impact. Trauma Insurance is there to protect you and your loved ones when a serious illness or injury strikes, offering a financial buffer during a time when you need to focus on recovery, not expenses.
...she might not be right mate.
Life is unpredictable. Peace of mind is priceless.
None of us can predict when or how we’ll depart this world, but we can prepare for the impact it has on those we love. When you’re gone, you won’t just leave a hole in their hearts - you could also leave a significant financial gap.
Your family could face tough choices, like how to make ends meet when one parent has to return to work, or even where to live when the mortgage becomes unaffordable. Life Insurance is not just a policy. It’s a promise to care for those you leave behind.

Trauma Insurance
65% of Kiwis will be diagnosed with a critical illness*
(and half of those are cancer)
Do I need Trauma Insurance?
Everyone’s life circumstances are unique, but think about how you’d manage if you were suddenly diagnosed with a major illness or experienced a serious injury.
Trauma insurance covers a range of life-altering conditions, such as:
-
cancer
-
heart attack
-
stroke
-
major head trauma
-
severe burns
giving you a financial cushion to maintain your lifestyle, pay bills, and manage additional medical expenses. Without it, the pressure of lost income and medical costs could force difficult decisions about your care, housing, or family’s future.
Trauma insurance steps in at life’s most challenging moments, providing you with the financial support to focus on recovery. Whether it’s medical treatment, rehabilitation, or even taking time off work, you won’t need to worry about where the money is coming from.
Time off
Recovery
Time out
This type of insurance often becomes a priority after major life events like starting a family, purchasing a home, or experiencing a health scare. These are the moments when it’s clear how much your health and well-being matter.
Just like with life insurance, the right cover amount varies for everyone, and a financial adviser will work with you to assess how much protection is necessary to safeguard your future and your loved ones during recovery.

I appreciated Lewis' diligence, perseverance and patience. To be honest, while important, filling out medical declarations and reading screeds of paperwork is pretty low on my priority list..... Lewis got it across the line with a few variances from genuine insights along the way. Full credit to him for listening and personalising a policy that best suits my needs. Would not hesitate to recommend him to any prospective clients. Much appreciated.

How much do I need?
It can be hard to predict exactly how much cover you might need if you face a serious illness or injury. That’s where an experienced financial adviser comes in. We help you calculate the right amount of cover to ensure you’re financially secure, even when the worst happens.
There is huge variety in what's covered in different policies, which is why it's so important to discuss these options with a financial adviser. Policies can vary from covering 6-70 conditions, and some policies allow you to claim multiple times.
Whether you're concerned about maintaining your income, paying for rehabilitation, or covering large medical expenses, we’ll guide you through the process to find the best provider and policy for your needs.
Trauma Insurance: common myths
Myth 1: "ACC will cover me."
ACC only covers injuries, not illnesses. If you're diagnosed with cancer or suffer a heart attack, ACC won’t pay out. Trauma insurance covers serious illnesses as well as injuries, providing a financial safety net for all kinds of life-altering events, not just accidents.
Myth 2: "I’ll just rely on my sick leave."
That's the perfect time to get cover!
Sick leave may cover a few days or weeks, but what happens when recovery takes months or longer? Trauma insurance provides a lump sum that you can use for living expenses, treatment costs, or anything else while you're out of work - no matter how long it takes to recover.
Myth 3: "I’m already covered by my health insurance."
Health insurance helps with medical costs, but it doesn’t replace lost income or help with bills like your mortgage, childcare, or household expenses. Trauma insurance fills the financial gaps that health insurance doesn’t cover, allowing you to maintain your lifestyle during a difficult time.
How will you afford your health insurance premiums if you're out of work recovering?
Myth 4: "It won’t happen to me."
No one expects to get diagnosed with a serious illness, but the statistics say otherwise. A significant percentage of Kiwis will face a major health event before they retire. Trauma insurance is about being prepared for the unexpected - not gambling on good luck. 65% of all New Zealanders will be diagnosed with a critical illness during their lifetimes. And half of that is cancer alone.
Myth 5: "I can’t afford trauma insurance."
Trauma insurance can be surprisingly affordable, especially if you start while you're healthy. The cost of not having it when you need it - lost income, medical expenses, financial strain on your family - can far outweigh the premiums. A financial adviser can help find a policy that fits your budget.

* To determine the probability that any given person in New Zealand will be diagnosed with at least one of the conditions listed in the AIA Progressive Care and Critical Conditions policies during their lifetime, we'll need to analyze epidemiological data on the incidence and prevalence of these conditions within the New Zealand population. Overview of the Conditions The conditions listed encompass a wide range of serious illnesses, including: Cancer-related conditions: Any malignant tumour, prostate cancer, malignant melanoma, carcinoma in situ, various lymphomas, leukaemia, and others. Cardiovascular conditions: Heart attack, coronary artery bypass graft, angioplasty, cardiomyopathy, heart valve surgery, and more. Neurological conditions: Stroke, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and others. Loss of function: Paralysis, loss of sight, hearing, speech, limbs, severe burns, and others. Other health events: Chronic liver failure, chronic lung failure, chronic kidney failure, major organ transplant, severe osteoporosis, severe rheumatoid arthritis, advanced diabetes, and more. Methodology To estimate the probability, we'll: Gather Data on Lifetime Risk: Find the lifetime risk (up to age 85) for each major category of conditions. Adjust for Overlaps: Account for individuals who may develop more than one condition. Calculate the Combined Probability: Use statistical methods to estimate the overall chance of developing at least one condition. Data Analysis Cancer Lifetime Risk: According to the New Zealand Ministry of Health, the lifetime risk of developing cancer is approximately one in three (33.3%) for both men and women. Explanation: This includes all forms of cancer, many of which are listed in the policy conditions. Cardiovascular Diseases Heart Disease: Prevalence: About 6% of New Zealand adults have been diagnosed with heart disease. Lifetime Risk: The lifetime risk is higher when considering undiagnosed cases and age progression. Estimates suggest up to 20%. Stroke: Incidence: Approximately 9,000 New Zealanders suffer a stroke each year. Lifetime Risk: The risk increases with age, with an estimated lifetime risk of about 15%. Neurological Conditions Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease: Prevalence: Around 70,000 people are living with dementia in New Zealand. Lifetime Risk: Estimated at 10%, increasing with age. Parkinson's Disease: Prevalence: Approximately 1% of those over 60. Lifetime Risk: Around 2%. Other Conditions Diabetes: Prevalence: About 7% of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes. Lifetime Risk: Higher when including undiagnosed cases; estimated at 10%. Chronic Kidney Disease: Prevalence: Chronic kidney disease affects about 11% of adults. Chronic Lung Diseases (COPD): Prevalence: Affects around 15% of adults over 45. Severe Arthritis and Osteoporosis: Prevalence: Osteoarthritis affects about 10%, osteoporosis about 5%. Calculating the Combined Probability Given the overlap between conditions and the likelihood of comorbidities (e.g., a person with diabetes may also have heart disease), simply adding up the probabilities would overestimate the risk. Instead, we'll use the principle of inclusion-exclusion and consider the major categories to estimate the combined probability. Simplified Estimation Let's consider the major categories with their estimated lifetime risks: Cancer: 33% Cardiovascular Diseases: 25% (combining heart disease and stroke) Neurological Conditions: 15% Other Conditions: 20% (including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, COPD, severe arthritis, and others) Assuming independence (which is a simplification), the probability that a person does not develop any of these conditions is: P(No Condition)=(1−0.33)×(1−0.25)×(1−0.15)×(1−0.20) P(No Condition)=0.67×0.75×0.85×0.80 P(No Condition)=0.3417 or 34.17% Therefore, the probability that a person will develop at least one condition is: P(At Least One Condition)=1−P(No Condition) P(At Least One Condition)=1−0.3417=0.6583 or 65.83% Adjusting for Overlaps and Comorbidities The above calculation doesn't fully account for the overlapping risk factors and comorbidities, which are significant in medical conditions. For instance: Risk Factors: Conditions like smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle increase the risk for multiple diseases. Age Factor: The risk of many of these conditions increases with age. Genetic Predispositions: Family history can increase risk across several conditions. Given these factors, the probability of developing at least one condition is likely higher than the simplified estimate. Notes Variability: Individual risk can vary greatly based on genetics, lifestyle, environment, and access to healthcare. Data Limitations: Exact probabilities are difficult to calculate due to overlapping conditions and lack of comprehensive data on all conditions listed. Preventative Measures: Lifestyle changes and preventive healthcare can reduce the risk of many of these conditions. Recommendations For a more personalised risk assessment, individuals should consult healthcare professionals. Public health initiatives aimed at reducing risk factors (e.g., smoking cessation, promoting physical activity) can lower the overall incidence of these conditions.
